One thing that feels very different about the crypto market now is that it is becoming less useful to evaluate tokens in isolation. A large part of the real competition is happening at the ecosystem level: developers, liquidity, applications, infrastructure, users and capital are all clustering around a smaller number of networks.

Ethereum is still difficult to ignore because of its developer base, DeFi infrastructure and Layer 2 ecosystem. Even when activity moves away from Ethereum mainnet, a large amount of development is still connected to the broader Ethereum stack. The bigger question is whether that activity ultimately strengthens ETH itself or gradually shifts more value toward Layer 2 networks and applications.

Solana is probably the ecosystem I see discussed most often as the strongest alternative. It has built meaningful activity around trading, DeFi, payments and consumer-focused applications, and the user experience is very different from what many people associate with older blockchain networks. At the same time, there are still legitimate debates around decentralization, validator economics and whether current levels of activity are sustainable.

Bitcoin is interesting for a different reason. It is not trying to compete directly with Ethereum or Solana as a general-purpose application platform, but infrastructure around Bitcoin continues evolving through Lightning, custody services, institutional products and experiments built around the network. That makes the Bitcoin ecosystem worth watching even if the development model looks very different.

I am also interested in ecosystems that may not currently have the largest market capitalizations but are building specialized infrastructure around interoperability, privacy, decentralized compute, data availability or real-world assets. Some of these niches may eventually matter more than another general-purpose Layer 1.

The biggest challenge is separating real ecosystem growth from temporary incentive-driven activity. High transaction counts or TVL can look impressive, but if users disappear when token rewards fall, the activity may not be as durable as it first appears.

Which crypto ecosystems are you watching most closely in 2026?

What matters most to you when evaluating an ecosystem — developers, active users, liquidity, stablecoin activity, applications, decentralization or institutional adoption?

And is there any smaller ecosystem you think the broader market is currently underestimating?
