Holding an altcoin through an entire crypto market cycle is very different from trading it for a few weeks. A project can look strong during a bull market simply because liquidity is expanding, narratives are hot and almost every token is moving higher. The harder test comes when attention disappears, volume falls and the market enters a long period of consolidation or decline.

For me, one of the first things that matters is whether the project still has a reason to exist when speculation disappears. Real network usage, active developers, growing infrastructure, meaningful integrations and users who actually need the product are much more important over several years than short-term social media attention.

Tokenomics also become much more important for long-term holdings. A project may have excellent technology, but large future unlocks, aggressive emissions or weak value capture can create constant selling pressure. I would rather hold a token with understandable supply dynamics than one where the circulating supply could change dramatically over the next few years.

Another factor is whether the team and ecosystem can survive a bear market. Projects that continue shipping upgrades, retaining developers and supporting users when prices are weak usually give me more confidence than ecosystems that go quiet once incentives disappear.

Liquidity matters too. Even a fundamentally interesting token can become difficult to hold if market depth disappears or most trading activity moves to a small number of venues. Long-term investors still need a realistic exit path.

I also think competitive positioning is underrated. Crypto changes quickly, and a project that looks unique today can become replaceable if another network offers the same functionality with better liquidity, lower costs or a stronger developer ecosystem.

So what makes an altcoin worth holding through an entire market cycle for you?

Do you focus most on network activity, developer growth, tokenomics, revenue, decentralization, ecosystem adoption or market liquidity?

And are there any altcoins you would genuinely be comfortable holding for four or five years without actively trading around the position?
