Ethereum has gone through a long series of protocol upgrades, but from a normal user’s perspective, not every technical improvement is immediately noticeable. Some upgrades are extremely important for the network while barely changing the experience of sending ETH, using DeFi or interacting with a dApp.
For me, the biggest improvements are the ones that reduce friction. Lower transaction costs, faster confirmations, better Layer 2 integration and more predictable network behavior matter much more to everyday users than technical changes they never directly see.
The shift toward a staking-based network was one of Ethereum’s biggest structural changes. It changed how the network is secured and made staking a major part of the ETH ecosystem, but I am not sure most regular users would describe it as an immediate usability improvement.
Scaling has probably had a more visible impact. The growth of Layer 2 networks has made many Ethereum-based applications much cheaper to use. Transactions that would have been expensive on mainnet can now be executed for a fraction of the cost, which has opened the ecosystem to smaller users and more frequent activity.
At the same time, Layer 2 adoption has introduced new complexity. Users now need to understand different networks, bridges, gas tokens and liquidity fragmentation. So while Ethereum has become cheaper in many situations, the overall experience can still feel complicated compared with using a single high-throughput blockchain.
I also think wallet improvements deserve some credit. Better transaction previews, account abstraction, simpler recovery systems and smarter permission controls could eventually have as much impact on Ethereum adoption as base-layer upgrades.
The bigger question is whether Ethereum development is moving toward making blockchain complexity invisible to the user. In my opinion, mass adoption probably requires people to use Ethereum-based applications without constantly thinking about gas, bridges or which Layer 2 they are connected to.
