Ethereum staking has become one of the most important parts of the ETH investment thesis, but I think the question is more complicated than simply comparing the staking yield with the return from holding ETH.
For long-term holders, the main benefit is obvious: instead of keeping ETH completely idle, staking allows holders to participate in network security while earning additional ETH over time. If someone already plans to hold Ethereum for several years, that can make staking look like a natural extension of the strategy.
The real question is whether the extra yield justifies the additional risks.
Running your own validator gives more control, but it also requires technical knowledge, reliable infrastructure and enough ETH to meet validator requirements. Liquid staking services are much easier to use, but they introduce smart contract risk, protocol risk and potential concentration around a small number of staking providers.
Liquidity also matters. Depending on the staking method, accessing funds may not be as simple as moving ETH directly from a wallet. Long-term holders may be comfortable with that, but someone who wants to react quickly to market conditions could prefer keeping at least part of the position liquid.
There is also the issue of opportunity cost. DeFi protocols sometimes offer higher yields than standard Ethereum staking, but higher returns generally come with additional layers of risk. For a long-term holder, a lower but more understandable staking return may actually be more attractive than constantly moving ETH between higher-yield strategies.
Another factor I watch is how staking affects Ethereum decentralization. If an increasingly large share of staked ETH becomes concentrated in a few major providers, the network could become more dependent on those entities. That does not automatically make staking unattractive, but it is something I would consider when choosing how to participate.
For me, Ethereum staking makes the most sense when it supports an existing long-term ETH thesis rather than becoming the reason for buying ETH in the first place.
Do you currently stake your ETH?
Do you prefer solo staking, liquid staking, exchange staking or simply keeping ETH unstaked in self-custody?
And what level of staking yield would make the additional risks worthwhile for you as a long-term Ethereum holder?
