Not financial return — just overall value in life or work.
There are plenty of skills that require hundreds of hours to learn but continue paying off for years afterward.
A few obvious examples:
- programming;
- sales;
- writing;
- public speaking;
- understanding accounting;
- learning another language;
- negotiation;
- data analysis;
- investing;
- using automation tools effectively.
The interesting thing is that the highest-return skills are often not the most technical ones.
For example, a strong developer who cannot communicate ideas clearly can be less effective than someone technically weaker but much better at explaining, selling and prioritizing.
For me, the best skills are usually transferable between industries.
You can change jobs, businesses or markets and they still remain useful.
