One of the hardest portfolio decisions in crypto is not whether to own Bitcoin, but how much of the total allocation should stay in BTC compared with altcoins, stablecoins and other digital assets.
For many investors, Bitcoin acts as the core position because it has the deepest liquidity, the longest operating history and a more established market structure than most cryptocurrencies. That can make BTC feel like the lower-risk part of a crypto portfolio, even though Bitcoin itself is still a highly volatile asset.
The trade-off is opportunity cost. A portfolio heavily concentrated in Bitcoin may be more resilient during weak market conditions, but it can also underperform during periods when capital rotates aggressively into Ethereum, Solana or smaller altcoins. Investors who want higher potential returns usually accept more exposure to assets with greater project-specific and liquidity risk.
I think market cycle positioning also matters. Some people increase Bitcoin exposure when uncertainty is high and gradually rotate into altcoins when market breadth improves. Others prefer maintaining a fixed allocation regardless of short-term conditions because constantly changing portfolio weights can easily turn into emotional market timing.
There is also a big difference between someone whose entire investment portfolio is crypto and someone who treats crypto as a smaller allocation within a broader portfolio containing equities, bonds, cash or other assets. A 70% Bitcoin allocation inside a crypto portfolio does not necessarily mean 70% of someone’s total wealth is in BTC.
Personally, I think the more useful question is not “What is the perfect Bitcoin percentage?” but what role Bitcoin is supposed to play. Is it the portfolio anchor, a long-term reserve asset, a hedge against more speculative altcoin exposure or simply another position competing for returns?
How much of your crypto portfolio do you currently keep in Bitcoin?
Would you consider something like 50–70% BTC too conservative, or does that provide the right balance between Bitcoin exposure and altcoin opportunities?
And do you actively change your Bitcoin allocation during different stages of the crypto market cycle, or keep the percentage relatively stable?
