Keeping crypto on an exchange is convenient, but long-term storage introduces a different set of risks than short-term trading.
For active traders, leaving some funds on an exchange makes sense. It allows faster execution, easier portfolio adjustments and immediate access to different markets. The problem is when temporary trading capital gradually turns into a long-term balance that sits on the platform for months or years.
The biggest concern is counterparty risk. When crypto remains on an exchange, users depend on that platform’s custody systems, financial stability, internal controls and withdrawal infrastructure. Even if the exchange is reputable, the user does not fully control access to the assets.
Self-custody changes that relationship. Moving long-term holdings to a hardware wallet or another secure wallet gives the user direct control over the private keys. That reduces exchange-related risk, but it also introduces personal responsibility for backups, recovery and transaction security.
I think a mixed approach often makes the most sense. Keep only the amount needed for active trading on exchanges and move longer-term holdings into self-custody. The exact balance depends on how frequently someone trades and how comfortable they are managing their own wallets.
Another factor is withdrawal speed. Even if an exchange has strong security, there can still be periods when withdrawals are delayed because of maintenance, compliance reviews or technical issues. That may not matter for someone holding long term, but it becomes a problem if access is suddenly needed.
I also think diversification matters. Keeping all exchange-based funds on a single platform creates unnecessary concentration risk. Traders who need to maintain balances on exchanges may reduce exposure by spreading operational funds across more than one trusted platform.
