When people talk about long-term crypto investing, Bitcoin and Ethereum usually dominate the conversation. But the altcoin market is much broader now, and several ecosystems are trying to build real infrastructure, applications and user activity rather than relying only on token speculation.

The difficult part is deciding what “strong fundamentals” actually means for an altcoin. Market capitalization alone does not tell us much. I tend to look more closely at network usage, developer activity, liquidity, decentralization, token economics, security history and whether the project has a realistic reason to exist several years from now.

Solana is an obvious example because it has built one of the largest application ecosystems outside Ethereum. It has strong activity across DeFi, payments, consumer applications and trading infrastructure, but the network also faces questions around decentralization, validator requirements and how much current activity is driven by speculation.

XRP represents a very different thesis. Its supporters focus heavily on payments and institutional use cases, while critics often question whether the token itself captures enough value from the broader ecosystem. That makes it an interesting example of why adoption and token performance are not always the same thing.

There are also projects focused on interoperability, decentralized infrastructure, privacy, data availability and specialized Layer 1 networks. Some may have technically strong products but still struggle to build meaningful user demand.

For me, the most important question is whether a project has a durable competitive advantage. In crypto, narratives can generate enormous short-term attention, but long-term value probably requires something harder to copy: liquidity, developers, users, infrastructure, network effects or a genuinely differentiated technology.

Which altcoins do you currently believe have the strongest fundamentals outside Bitcoin and Ethereum?

What matters most when you evaluate them: network activity, revenue, developer growth, decentralization, tokenomics, institutional adoption or actual users?

And are there any projects you consider fundamentally strong even if their token price has not reflected that yet?

One thing that feels very different about the crypto market now is that it is becoming less useful to evaluate tokens in isolation. A large part of the real competition is happening at the ecosystem level: developers, liquidity, applications, infrastructure, users and capital are all clustering around a smaller number of networks.

Ethereum is still difficult to ignore because of its developer base, DeFi infrastructure and Layer 2 ecosystem. Even when activity moves away from Ethereum mainnet, a large amount of development is still connected to the broader Ethereum stack. The bigger question is whether that activity ultimately strengthens ETH itself or gradually shifts more value toward Layer 2 networks and applications.

Solana is probably the ecosystem I see discussed most often as the strongest alternative. It has built meaningful activity around trading, DeFi, payments and consumer-focused applications, and the user experience is very different from what many people associate with older blockchain networks. At the same time, there are still legitimate debates around decentralization, validator economics and whether current levels of activity are sustainable.

Bitcoin is interesting for a different reason. It is not trying to compete directly with Ethereum or Solana as a general-purpose application platform, but infrastructure around Bitcoin continues evolving through Lightning, custody services, institutional products and experiments built around the network. That makes the Bitcoin ecosystem worth watching even if the development model looks very different.

I am also interested in ecosystems that may not currently have the largest market capitalizations but are building specialized infrastructure around interoperability, privacy, decentralized compute, data availability or real-world assets. Some of these niches may eventually matter more than another general-purpose Layer 1.

The biggest challenge is separating real ecosystem growth from temporary incentive-driven activity. High transaction counts or TVL can look impressive, but if users disappear when token rewards fall, the activity may not be as durable as it first appears.

Which crypto ecosystems are you watching most closely in 2026?

What matters most to you when evaluating an ecosystem — developers, active users, liquidity, stablecoin activity, applications, decentralization or institutional adoption?

And is there any smaller ecosystem you think the broader market is currently underestimating?

Holding an altcoin through an entire crypto market cycle is very different from trading it for a few weeks. A project can look strong during a bull market simply because liquidity is expanding, narratives are hot and almost every token is moving higher. The harder test comes when attention disappears, volume falls and the market enters a long period of consolidation or decline.

For me, one of the first things that matters is whether the project still has a reason to exist when speculation disappears. Real network usage, active developers, growing infrastructure, meaningful integrations and users who actually need the product are much more important over several years than short-term social media attention.

Tokenomics also become much more important for long-term holdings. A project may have excellent technology, but large future unlocks, aggressive emissions or weak value capture can create constant selling pressure. I would rather hold a token with understandable supply dynamics than one where the circulating supply could change dramatically over the next few years.

Another factor is whether the team and ecosystem can survive a bear market. Projects that continue shipping upgrades, retaining developers and supporting users when prices are weak usually give me more confidence than ecosystems that go quiet once incentives disappear.

Liquidity matters too. Even a fundamentally interesting token can become difficult to hold if market depth disappears or most trading activity moves to a small number of venues. Long-term investors still need a realistic exit path.

I also think competitive positioning is underrated. Crypto changes quickly, and a project that looks unique today can become replaceable if another network offers the same functionality with better liquidity, lower costs or a stronger developer ecosystem.

So what makes an altcoin worth holding through an entire market cycle for you?

Do you focus most on network activity, developer growth, tokenomics, revenue, decentralization, ecosystem adoption or market liquidity?

And are there any altcoins you would genuinely be comfortable holding for four or five years without actively trading around the position?

Altcoin seasons used to feel relatively easy to identify in hindsight. Bitcoin would make a strong move, BTC dominance would eventually weaken, Ethereum would begin outperforming, and liquidity would spread across larger altcoins before reaching smaller and more speculative projects.

I am not sure that model works as cleanly anymore.

The crypto market is much more fragmented now. There are thousands of tokens competing for attention, several major Layer 1 ecosystems, Layer 2 networks, DeFi protocols, memecoins, AI-related projects, gaming tokens and newly launched assets appearing constantly. Capital has far more places to go, which may make broad market-wide altcoin rallies less likely.

Instead, we seem to get shorter sector rotations. One week Solana ecosystem tokens may lead, then attention moves toward AI-related projects, DeFi, memecoins or another narrative. By the time the wider market notices the move, a large part of the upside may already have happened.

Token supply is another factor. Many newer projects have relatively small circulating supplies compared with their fully diluted valuations. Unlock schedules can introduce significant selling pressure just as market interest begins increasing. That makes some modern altcoins behave very differently from assets that were already widely distributed during previous cycles.

Bitcoin and institutional capital may also be changing the structure of altcoin seasons. If a larger share of new money enters crypto through Bitcoin ETFs or other regulated BTC products, that capital does not necessarily rotate into smaller tokens the way retail capital historically did.

For traders, this creates a difficult question: should we still wait for a traditional “altseason,” or is it more useful to think in terms of shorter individual sector rotations?

Have you noticed altcoin opportunities becoming shorter and more selective?

What indicators do you use to recognize a rotation early — Bitcoin dominance, ETH/BTC, stablecoin liquidity, sector volume, social activity or something else?

And do you think we will ever see another broad altcoin season where most of the market rises together, or has crypto become too fragmented for that?
